Happy birthday. Union Square celebrates its 9th birthday with cake, food and performances. Photos: Gerald Koo
If you were wondering where the whole boisterous merry-making shebang at Union Square’s 9th anniversary party was, you probably arrived late as the highlights mostly took place before 9pm. Nonetheless the music played, alcohol flowed and revellers danced thereafter, not unlike a celebration at our usual salsa haunt. We happily recount the birthday celebration at dear old Union Square.

When the DJ announced that the day would have been Michael Jackson’s 51st birthday and a tribute video to the late pop star started running, our friend next to us whispered, “Oh that is why the party is called black and white la.” Er well not really. The party is actually themed white and black in line with a festival in Latin America and MJ’s birthday was really a coincidence, we hear. Never mind that we were rather blur on why we were dressed to black and white, we still packed Union Square to the brim, lapped up the performances and salsa-ed to MJ’s hits. As the King said, “If you would be my baby it don’t matter if you’re black or white.” Yeah yeah yeah.
