The drill begins. ADS' student performance team at training.                                                   Photos: Vivian Teo

They undergo gruelling dance training but are not professional dancers. They are not in the pro-teams of their salsa dance schools but are gradually seen more on global salsa congresses. Uh wait, so what is a student performance team really? We ask Wee Tze Yi aka Zee, co-leader, of Attitude Dance Studio’s student team to shed some light while students - Stacy Poh, Jean Wong and Chan Weng Kit – recount the route of dancing from comfy homeground to international stages.

With En Motion Dance School’s third annual bachata competition coming up, we ask the school’s artistic director, Gary Foo, how big will this year’s event get. Zeroing in on Zee PDF Print

My sassy teacher. Zee teaching Body Movement at ADS.                               Photos: Vivian Teo

A non-salsa dancing girlfriend of mine whom once saw a photo of him - sharply-dressed with a cheeky grin on his handsome mug at a salsa event – badgered for the picture for her desktop wallpaper. Another, after seeing his photo, remarked, “He’s so my type,”  to which a third female retorted, “I think he is many women’s type.”

“[Stunned silence] Er…that’s the first time I’m hearing it! Hahaha! I’m very flattered. It’s quite a big compliment. How do I feel about it…I don't know really!” And the male protagonist’s reaction to the true stories above trails off in nervous laughter. Ah, such is the unassuming charm of Wee Tze Yi aka Zee, arguably one of the most good-looking salsa instructor, or we could quite comfortably say, salsero in
Singapore.

Easy peasy. Salsa Fanatico shows it is not hard when you are doing what you love most.     Photo: Gerald Koo

Got talent? Thirst for the limelight? Reckon you should be a salsa star? But never mustered the guts to attend auditions? Let’s face it. Auditions are daunting. The thought of my making a feeble attempt to impress a panel of stone-faced judges is enough to makes me pee in my pants in fright. To soothe our frazzled nerves, Salsa Fanatico’s dance captain, Lynda Young, and admin manager, Wendy Tan, tell us we are unlikely to faint at auditions. But if you really do, performer, Colin Ng, will be there to help.

Bailamos once more PDF Print

Last year’s Bailamos en la Calle was memorable. We recall some superb Latin dance and salsa choreographies performed by young talents from our tertiary institutions and also, the crushing crowd of students, salseros and proud parents that jam-packed Esplanade’s DXO. Singapore Management University’s Caderas Latinas is bringing the Bailamos event - dubbed Singapore’s largest inter-tertiary dance party - back for its second year. Titled Bailamos Para Siempre (meaning “We dance forever”), the event evolves from its laid-back street dancing theme last year to a classy affair this year. Charlotte Tan, corporate communications officer for Bailamos Para Siempre, tells us how different this year’s Bailamos will be and reveals an ‘outrageous’ highlight for the evening.
