Salsa & the City brings you musings of a self-styled diva and fellow dance enthusiasts, and annotations of dancing salsa in this little tropical island.
Goodbye 2009. Hello 2010!

The year of 2009 started heavy as the global economic crisis got underway and economists were forecasting of prolonged recessions, while employers dished out pay cuts and retrenchments. But the good news is as we near the end of the year, the doom-and-gloom was really not as bad as expected, with forecasters now declaring we are more or less out of the woods. Well well, along with that, say hello to positive economic growths, rising stockmarkets, and new integrated resorts and casinos. Now, does it not feel like exciting times are not so far ahead?

We live in snap-happy times, what with camera phones and video-sharing websites, videos - good and bad - are popping up on Facebook and Youtube faster than you can say, “I’m a video star?” Like juicy gossips, we so love to share the good stuff. I mean hey, not all of us have the means of flying to that salsa congress at the other side of the world right. But at live events like concerts and salsa parties, some organisers prohibit the recording of performances. We ask the dance schools, salseros and salseras: Should a hoo-ha be made of performance video-ing?
I’m a business journalist by day. At work, I talk to company CEOs and GMs on a daily basis and at SalsaSingapore, I have interviewed renowned salsa celebrities. Journos, like us, pride ourselves on our ability to draw information and keep conversations going. I have no qualms rattling off like a machine gun at social gatherings either. The irony of it all is when I’m not working and faced with someone I idolise, I clam up and struggle to say something. The very skill I use to keep my rice bowl mysteriously vanishes like a ship in the Bermuda Triangle. I think it is because I have SARS: Star-struck Adverse Reaction Syndrome.
Is it just me or did the year of 2008 feel really crappy? Let’s just say I am glad the year where we were bombarded with news of bank collapses and retrenchments is coming to an end. Like the economy, Singapore’s salsa scene was eventful in 2008, it was a year filled with firsts and lasts.
